HISTORIC RENOVATION, MODERN CONTEXT
IN ASSOCIATION WITH GUND PARTNERSHIP
Franklin Hall is one of the most beautiful examples of collegiate Gothic buildings on the IU campus in Bloomington, Indiana. Prior to renovation as the new Media School, Franklin hall historically served as the campus library. Today, the School of Journalism, the Department of Communication and Culture and the Department of Telecommunications unite in the new Media School and find their home in Franklin Hall.
This new vision of Franklin Hall meant an almost complete renovation of the interior. Because Franklin Hall has undergone several additions, the main goal of the renovation was to create a core gathering space that connects the various departments. This was accomplished by creating an atrium space in the center of the building.
The atrium space features an oversized digital display, soft seating and open balconies on several levels. In addition, the Media School offers a state-of-the-art broadcast studio, an intimate film screening room, a large tiered classroom, several active learning classrooms, a gaming development suite, extended hour computer lab and editing bays. The new Media School at Franklin Hall is designed to bring a multitude of student interests and talents together with a wide variety of resources to explore the ever-evolving role of media.
