IMPROVING THE EDUCATIONAL ENVIRONMENT THRU DESIGN

Newburgh is a small, historic Indiana river town, settled in the 1880s. Its present elementary school was built in the early 1970s. At that time, functional, flat-roofed schools, tightly insulated, with small windows, were being constructed throughout the country.

The renovation and expansion of the Newburgh Elementary School has successfully integrated several different-aged building additions into a unified, modern K–6 education center. The kindergarten suite has its own separate entrances and spaces now flow logically from grade to grade. The interior layout allows for passive security throughout.

The building exterior has been updated and the refurbished school bell is incorporated into the new entrance. Auto, bus, and pedestrian circulation routes have been redesigned to minimize conflicts and provide for the children’s safety. The new facility offers open-gymnasium nights to welcome the wider community with open arms.
